Stone, Timber, Water: Building a Material Palette for a Wellness Pavilion

Notes on restraint from a resort spa pavilion project — why fewer materials, used more precisely, read as more luxurious than a wider palette.

A wellness pavilion has one job the rest of a resort doesn't: it has to slow a guest down within the first ten seconds of arrival. Material choice does most of that work, before a single treatment begins.

We limited the palette to three materials — a local stone for mass and grounding, dark timber for warmth and screening, and still water as the connective element running through the plan. Restricting the palette this tightly forces every material to be used at full confidence; there's nowhere for a cheaper substitute to hide.

Lighting was designed exclusively for dusk and evening use, since that's when the pavilion is busiest. Every render in the project's visualization set was produced at the same golden-hour light study, so the marketing images and the built experience will match on opening day.
